GEOLOGIST

Our client, a Major Oil and Gas Operator is seeking an experienced Geologist (new ventures). The role is based at Uxbridge and is an ongoing PAYE contract role initially until 31 December 2027.

The Role:

The Business Development Centre (BDC) Technical Evaluation Team provides geoscience leadership and technical support for the client’s New Ventures, farm-in and M&A activities. The team’s primary focus is on Africa, with additional evaluations across Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia. Working closely with commercial and technical stakeholders, the team identifies, evaluates and matures growth opportunities, progressing them from initial screening through detailed technical assessment and presentation to Technical Assurance committees and senior management.

We are seeking a proactive, self-motivated and collaborative geologist to help expand the client’s exploration portfolio. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing regional geological databases, building basin expertise, and identifying and evaluating exploration and acquisition opportunities. Key activities include basin and play analysis, play fairway mapping, well correlation, prospect characterization, resource estimation, risk assessment and opportunity ranking.

The role requires a strong foundation in petroleum geology and hydrocarbon exploration, together with the ability to integrate diverse datasets and develop robust technical recommendations under conditions of uncertainty. The successful candidate will work with a high degree of autonomy while collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams across geoscience, engineering and commercial functions.

Based in Uxbridge, the position reports to the Senior Manager, Technical Evaluation within the Business Development Centre and offers an opportunity to contribute directly to the company’s exploration growth strategy through the evaluation of high-impact international opportunities.

You will:

Lead geological evaluations across multiple New Venture and M&A opportunities in a range of depositional and structural settings, integrating diverse datasets to identify and mature exploration opportunities.

Work within multidisciplinary teams of geophysicists, petroleum system analysts, petrophysicists and engineers to assess prospectivity, risk, resources and commercial potential.

Recommend and utilize appropriate geological data, databases and studies to support regional, play and prospect evaluations.

Screen, evaluate and rank opportunities from bid rounds, data rooms, farm-ins and other business development activities.

Assess the technical quality of external evaluations from potential partners, joint ventures and service providers.

Collaborate with Technical Assurance teams to evaluate basin, play and prospect risk and resource assessments.

Present clear, evidence-based recommendations to management on whether to pursue, acquire, farm into or relinquish opportunities.

Monitor and apply advances in geological understanding and exploration technologies, promoting knowledge sharing across the organization.

Deliver geological work programmes through effective collaboration with technical teams across Uxbridge, Beijing, Calgary and Houston.

Build strong cross-functional relationships, sharing knowledge and contributing to collaborative problem solving.

You are/have:

Significant exploration experience within an Exploration & Production company.

Strong expertise in regional basin evaluation, petroleum systems analysis, fairway mapping, and prospect and lead assessment across multiple basins.

Demonstrated experience working with clastic and carbonate petroleum systems, diverse source rock and reservoir environments, and varied datasets.

Knowledge of plate reconstruction and paleogeographic modelling, particularly for frontier and emerging basins, including the Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic and Indian Ocean margins.

Strong skills in well log interpretation, volumetric assessment, risk evaluation, sequence stratigraphy and play-based exploration analysis.

Excellent communication, presentation and stakeholder engagement skills, coupled with strong cultural awareness.

A pragmatic approach to managing uncertainty, ambiguity and exploration risk.

Proficiency with Petrel, GEOX and ArcGIS (or equivalent geospatial software).

Experience in African and Mediterranean basins is desirable.

At a minimum, you have:

A higher degree (PhD, MSc or equivalent) in Geology, Geoscience or a related discipline.

Extensive experience in the oil and gas industry.
